Gardners General Store

There was a time not so long ago when most small towns had a place to buy food, clothing, farm and gardening tools, garden plants, seeds and penny candy for the children. It was called a general store. Today’s mega-department stores fill the same role, but they simply don’t possess the same charm and personality. The community atmosphere has been replaced by a larger inventory and fast-paced, get-you-in-and-out-of-here-in-a-hurry service.

A few general stores have survived, but not many dot the landscape of our country. Thanks to Glynnis Farmwald and her husband, John, a Hartsville landmark has been transformed into a place that truly has the look and feel of a general store.

The Farmwalds took the dimly lit store with its one small light and brightened it up, showcasing the polished wood floors and giving customers a better view of the merchandise. The storefront was small and crowded. Customers would basically drive up, tell them what they needed and someone would carry it out.
We have more than doubled the floor space and increased our inventory.
One of the first things we added was food produced by local farmers.
The milk is delivered once a week and it flies off the shelf as fast as we get it. we also carry beef and pork.

Lots of people are concerned about what they are eating. We consider it a privilege to know some of the small farmers in the area and serve as an outlet for their products.
